Sep. 29th, 2011 07:26 pmTom, being the controlling bastard he is, is a Legilimens, and a particularly skilled one at that. Legilimency is the art of correctly interpreting another's mind, or magical mind reading. Eye contact is generally necessary for Legilimency, as is being nearby (so he won't be able to preform it over the network) and having the desire to invade another person's thoughts, and though there is a spell to push one's mind into another person's, it can be performed non-verbally by a skilled Legilimens. A skilled Legilimens is also almost undetectable, unless they're being careless or particularly forceful.
Tom's particular skill at it means he can usually tell when a person is lying without the spell and he will ruthlessly invade a character's mind with it. And if he finds your character interesting at all or suspects them of lying, he will use it. And he will try to remain undetected.
He is not, however, the master Legilimens his "future self" is, and so he'll almost always need to speak the spell aloud (even if it's just moving his lips) and he can be thwarted by someone good at blocking out psychic attacks or Occlumency.
So, if you're a castmate or you're planning to interact with Tom much, if you could please fill out the following so I don't step on anyone toes:
1) Can Tom read your characters' mind or is there something that might stop him from doing so?
2) If he can read their mind, what would he find there and how deep might he be able to go? He will especially be looking for any weaknesses he might be able to exploit and anything that character wants to keep secret.
3) Is there anything about your character that might keep him from knowing they're lying? Please keep in mind that he is suspicious of everyone and extremely attentive to everything, so this ability is as much from tone of voice/expression/inconsistency in what's being said as it is Legilimency.
